'Maram' health scheme launched by Assam govt

Guwahati, Aug 28 (PTI) The Assam government today announced the "Maram" health scheme under which patients admitted in the general wards will be paid for their treatment.

Addressing a press conference here, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said patients admitted in the general ward of the three medical college hospitals will get Rs 100 daily while those in the district hospitals will be paid Rs 75 and in the rural health centres Rs 50.

Claiming this was the first such scheme launched by any state government in the country, Sarma said the government will incur a daily expenditure of Rs 10 lakh and the yearly budget will be Rs 36 crore.

He said the state government will take help of the infrastructure provided under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) for implementing the scheme which will come to effect from next month.
