Guwahati, Feb 4 : Shaken by the formation of a tea-Adivasi party, the Congress tea cell today decided to move Rahul Gandhi to regain its former popularity.
The cell, during a meeting here today, admitted that it had failed to address the aspirations of the tea tribes and decided to prepare an action plan that would be submitted to the AICC on future challenges in redressing the grievances of the community.
Several tea-Adivasi organisations have joined hands to float the National People’s Party to safeguard the interests of the tea community.
After today’s meeting, the chairman of the Congress tea cell, Bhagirat Karan, said they analysed why a section of the tea-Adivasi community felt the need to form a separate political party.
He said the community has become restive for three reasons. First, for the government’s failure to grant them Scheduled Tribes status. Second, for the failure of tea companies to provide basic facilities to labourers and last, because the new generation is uncertain of its political future in the Congress.
To address the problems, the tea cell will prepare an action plan and submit it to the AICC, as Rahul takes a keen interest in its affairs.
Karan said steps needed to be taken immediately as the formation of a tea party could have serious poll ramifications for the Congress, which has been traditionally supported by the tea community.
