Guwahati, Nov. 28 : City police today busted a gang of criminals and arrested nine persons allegedly involved in two shootout cases at Ganeshguri and Dispur in August and October this year.
Dispur police picked up the criminals during a nightlong operation on Friday in three different locations at Hatigaon, Basistha and Dispur, based on tip-offs that the goons were taking shelter at these places. The gang also included a woman.
The police said the gang was involved in the killing of a beverage company employee Keshav Phukan on August 10 this year at GNB Road near Ganeshguri. Phukan was on his way to a bank when two gunmen on a motorcycle fired at him and snatched away Rs 12 lakh.
The police said the gang members were also involved in the attack on Pargat Singh, a trader in Dispur on October 4. Two gunmen had fired at Singh at 8.30am that day, injuring him.
The nine criminals have been identified as Manjinder Sing, Ratul Kalita, Girin Saikia, Tarun Das, Dilip Das, Pranjal Deka, Utpal Kalita, Prashanta Kalita and Binita Bora. The police said Manjinder Sing and Ratul Kalita were killers and were involved in several cases of robbery in the city.
The police recovered a 9mm pistol, a motorcycle and some sharp weapons during the raids.
“They are all trained to use arms and used to work in groups. We came to know during investigation that they were involved in several murders and robberies in the city. We are interrogating them to get details of their criminal activities,” a source said.
The police are also investigating if the gang was involved in the attack on Ankit Agarwal, a young trader, in Beltola on October 5 when two motorcycle-borne gunmen had shot at him.
