APW for resumption of NRC

Guwahati, Aug 1 (PTI) The Assam Public Works (APW), an organisation of relatives of ULFA militants, today demanded resumption of the updating process of the National Registrar of Citizen (NRC).

"Those who are against the resumption of the process to update the NRC are frustrated as they have failed to convert illegal migrants from Bangladesh to legal voters", APW president Abhijit Sarma said here.Referring to recent violence in Barpeta district against updating of NRC which prompted the government to "temporarily" stop the process, the APW leader said the exercise could continue in other districts of the state.Dismissing fears that there was fault in the NRC proforma, Sarma said there might be some "confusion but this is not a deciding factor".

Earlier the influential All Assam Students Union (AASU) had criticised the government for stopping the exercise alleging that it was ploy to appease the minority community and protect illegal migrants.
