Assam shines at boxing meet

Jamshedpur, Oct. 5: The quarter-final of the 10th Senior Women National Boxing Championship at JRD Tata Sports Complex today started with Assam’s Sanashri flooring Vinisha Joshi of Rajasthan in a RSC (Referee Stops Contest) verdict.

The former was no match for Sanashri in the 46kg weight category. The Assam pugilist landed some solid jabs, registering a comfortable win. Krishna Thapa of Madhya Pradesh also made it to the last four by posting a 13-7 win over Delhi’s Arti Kumari in the same weight section.

Uttarakhand’s Hemani Mehta, K. Mandakini Chanu (All India Police Board) and Vanlalnduati (Tripura) also bagged slots in the semis. Hemani cut short the progress of Munita Devi (Arunachal Pradesh) 5-3 in 46kg while Mandikini defeated Nirmal Kumari (MP) 19-1 in the 48kg weight section. Vanlalnduati drubbed Susmita Kumari (Steel Plant Sportys Board) 12-1 in the same weight category.

Other pugilists who advanced into the semi-finals include Sudesh Kumari (Chandigarh), Mamta Kumari (Haryana), Meena Kumari (All India Police Board), Suman Kumari (Haryana), Sagar Tokas (Delhi) and Shashi Kiran (MP). Sudesh and Mamta put it across Ritu Kumari (Karnataka) and Alphonsa (Kerala) 5-2, 12-0, respectively, in the 48kg section while Meena, Suman and Sagar won over Kerala’s Hema Yogesh (18-2), Nagaland’s Meena Kumari (24-4) and Railways Sports Promotion Board’s (RSPB) Sushma Kumari (4-2) in 51kg category.
