Indefinite shutdown in Bongaigaon district

Guwahati, Jul 9 : Life was affected in Bongaigaon district of western Assam today in view of an indefinite shutdown called by the AKRSU in support of their various demands, including creation of a new state of Kamtapur.

Commercial establishments and educational institutions remained closed, while vehicles were also off the road.

The bandh supporters reportedly damaged several vehicles that had ventured out.

Parts of neighbouring Goalpara district also shut down in response to the bandh call by the AKRSU.

One person was reportedly killed when miscreants pelted stones on the vehicle the victim was travelling in.

The All Koch Rajbonshi Students Union (AKRSU) had given the indefinite shutdown call in support of their demand for a separate Kamtapur state and scheduled caste status for the Koch Rajbonshi community.

The AKRSU is also protesting the torching of its office at Bongaigaon by local people following an altercation between AKRSU members and public when the student activists nabbed two pickpockets.
