Assam halts registration process after violence

Authorities in India's northeastern Assam state have temporarily suspended a registration project after police fired on demonstrators in the town of Barpeta.
Police opened fire after protesters vandalised shops and vehicles.
More than 5,000 people, mostly from West Bengal, protested against the government's registration drive.
Demonstrators fear registration could identify them as non-Assamese and that they could be forced from the state.
Prohibitory orders are in force in Barpeta because of the tense situation.
Assamese groups, especially the state's powerful All Assam Students Union (Aasu), have criticised the state government for stopping the registration project.
