Assam govt sponsors heart surgery of 130 children

GUWAHATI, July 7 - The Assam government today said it will sponsor surgery of 130 children suffering from congenital heart defect under a scheme launched by the Health department.

According to the scheme, claimed as the first such project in the country, the state government would bear the cost of operation and treatment of children suffering from congenital heart defect. The patients would be operated upon at Narayana Hrudalaya Hospitals, Bangalore.

This year 130 children have been selected to be operated upon at government cost, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told reporters here.

The government has allocated Rs 2 crore this year for the project, he said.

Assam has a considerable number of children suffering from congenital heart defect. During a three-day screening here, nearly 1,000 children were detected suffering from the condition.
