Karimganj (Assam), Nov 1 (PTI) Five persons, protesting the arrest of two political leaders, were today injured in a clash with police which fired in the air to disperse the crowd at Hailakandi in the district.
Police said Independent MLA Siddique Ahmed and former minister Sahidul Alam Choudhury were arrested for violating prohibitory orders under section 144 CRPC while they were on their way to attend a rally at Hailakandi along with their supporters.
Protesting the arrest, their supporters allegedly clashed with police which had to baton-charge to disperse the crowd, they said.
The district administration had imposed the prohibitory orders since yesterday and had not granted permission to hold the rally, apprehending breach of peace.
The rally was to be held in protest against the alleged corruption by Assam Social Welfare Minister Gautom Roy, who hails from Hailakandi.
