JORHAT: There is good news for the Assam tea industry. The price of CTC (crush, tear cut or curl) at the Guwahati Tea auction Centre (GTAC) has fetched a record high price in recent times.
According to tea industry sources, the sale of No 24 sold on Wednesday at GTAC fetched Rs 225 a kg, which is an all-time high in the sale of CTC category in recent times.
The grade of the record sale of the CTC was BOP (Broken Orange Pekoe), which was sold to Madhuban Tea Company through the brokerage of J Thomas Company. GTAC Secretary Jayanta Kakati said the price of CTC tea reaching Rs 225 a kg "shows good quality of tea fetches good price" and is a positive sign for the industry. He added that producers should focus more on the quality as superior quality attracts better prices.
Kakati said the Halmari TE had been getting good price of its CTC as the last time high price in the same category (Rs 218 a kg), too, was fetched by the same garden at the GTAC sale early this year.
