ULFA's 'finance' and 'foreign secys' in judicial remand

ULFA 'finance secretary' Chitrabon Hazarika and 'foreign secretary' Sasha Choudhury, arrested in Bangladesh and handed over to Assam Police last month, were on Monday (December 7) remanded in judicial custody after a month in police remand. The two senior leaders were produced before the Kamrup Chief Judicial Magistrate Robin Phukan who rejected their prayers for bail and remanded them in judicial custody.

Departing from the usual practice of bringing the ULFA leaders in a bus, Hazarika and Choudhury were brought in a SUV and driven right up to the steps leading to the court. The step was taken after the Kamrup police and civil authorities in charge of security of the court premises were pulled up as a section of the crowd had shouted slogans in support of ULFA 'chairman' Arabinda Rajkhowa and 'deputy commander-in-chief' Raju Barua on December five during their production.

Phukan posted December 14 as the next day for the production of Hazarika and Choudhury in court. The CJM has asked for case diaries which are expected to be heard on December 14.

The police barred journalists from entering the court premises and a mild scuffle followed in which a few of them were injured.
