GUWAHATI, Aug 28 : That the Centre is worried over the situation in North Cachar Hills in Asom has been proved yet again when Union Home Minister P Chidambaram has asked Asom Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to be present in New Delhi on September 1 when the former will review the Asom law-and-order situation. This development came close on the heels of both the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister expressing their serious concern over the law-and-order situation in NC Hills at the chief ministers’ conference.
The situation in NC Hills can be gauged from the fact that though the government in Asom is led by the Congress, the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister did not refrain from expressing their concern over the law-and-order situation in the hill district at the recently held chief ministers’ conference in New Delhi. The surprise comment from the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister in the presence of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi exposed the actual situation in the hill district.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is going to visit NC Hills from August 29 to take stock of the situation there before his departure to New Delhi. In a recent press briefing, Gogoi said that he was more worried than the Prime Minister on the law-and-order situation in NC Hills. A month ago, Union Home Secretary GK Pillai had visited Asom but could not visit NC Hills due to bad weather. He, however, reviewed the NC Hills situation at a meeting with officials at Dispur. He also held a separate meeting with the Chief Minister on NC Hills. Since March 29 when violence erupted in NC Hills, as many as 64 people were killed and 550 houses torched in the district.
