Assam has highest prevalence of corporal punishment

Guwahati, Aug 6 (PTI) Assam has the dubious record of topping the list of 13 states in the country where prevalence of corporal punishment in schools is a problem with as high as 99.56 per cent of children suffering from the abuse.

Not only that, the state also has the largest proportion of girls among the students suffering physical punishment at 55 per cent, a recent study carried out by the Union Women and Child Development Ministry on child abuse found.

Two other states - Bihar and Kerala - have more girls than boys suffering from corporal punishment at the hands of their teachers, the director of the Law Research Institute, Eastern Region, Jeuti Barooah, quoting the study report, said.

Sporadic cases of severe punishment of children in Assam schools were also reported by parents, she said.
