Two killed in police firing in Assam, protests follow

Guwahati , July 11 : A truck driver and his helper were killed when they were fired upon by a constable for allegedly hitting the car of a senior police official, evoking strong protests from locals who blocked roads and gheraoed a police station before they were baton charged and dispersed.
The vehicle in which Assam CID&aposs SP Mridulananda Sarmah and his family were travelling collided with the truck near National Games Village in Lokhra Chariali area here last night, Kamrup (Metro) SSP P C Saloi said.

Sarma and his family members were injured in the mishap following which the constable G K Rai escorting Sarmah opened fire at the driver and helper of the truck, Saloi said.

While driver Krishna Chandra Barman died on the spot, helper Shiny succumbed to his injuries at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital here.

Angry residents of the area today blocked the National Highway 31 at Lokhra and gheraoed the Basishta police station demanding action against Rai and Sarma. Rai was later arrested.
