Declare emergency in NC Hills: BJP

GUWAHATI, July 5 – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Assam Pradesh on Thursday demanded of the Central Government to declare emergency in the trouble torn NC Hills district and give entire charge to the Army so as to bring the situation under control. The party also lambasted the Tarun Gogoi government for its failure to bring the situation under control even after the elapse of 100 days since fresh violence started in the hills district.

Addressing media persons here, senior leaders of the party who recently visited the hills district said that the right to life was totally violated in the hills district and militant groups are in control.

The BJP’s organising secretary of the North East P Chandrasekhar, who was in the team that visited the hills district, said that the Congress government has pushed the people of the hills district, into a death trap. “By directly and indirectly taking help of militant groups, including those in ceasefire, the Congress government allowed the militants to hold the common people in ransom,” said Chandrasekhar.

Relating the team’s experience while visiting the relief camps, violence affected villages and meeting members of different ethnic communities, Chandrasekhar said that government inefficiency has forced around 12,000 people to take shelter in 29 relief camps.

Chandrasekhar mentioned that despite the presence of a large security force, the people continued to live at the mercy of the militant groups. “Militants regularly sneak into the hills district from neighbouring Nagaland and Manipur but the government has failed to take concrete action like sealing the borders,” he rued.

Chandrasekhar observed that peace was fragile in the hills district because the ground rules for ceasefire were not adhered to religiously by the government as well as the militants.

“The government is not at all concerned that militant groups under ceasefire move about freely with arms,” said Chandrasekhar informing that the party has decided to raise the issue in the Parliament. “We will push for a ceasefire policy that will make mandatory total surrender of arms a pre-condition,” he said.
