GUWAHATI, April 10 : Asom DGP GM Srivastava today said more blasts cannot be ruled out in the State before the Rongali Bihu and
Lok Sabha elections.
Talking to newsmen at the Assam Police Headquarters in Guwahati today, Srivastava said the police has been playing its role.
“The public, press and all political parties should join hands with the police to tackle the situation,” he said, and added:
“The April 6 blast at Maligaon was the handiwork of the ULFA, and there is no doubt about it, even though more evidences are
required to pinpoint the exact ULFA cadres involved in the blast. However, we have enough information that Akash Thapa,
Monohari and Mukunda Rajbongshi have been taking the lead in the current operation of the rebel group.”
Srivastava further said: “It’s not a claim but a fact that the police has averted as many as 79 possible blasts in the State
in the last three months, besides recovering a huge quantity of arms and explosives. Even then as many as 16 blasts took
place during the period. We are now taking care to plug all holes to keep the militants at bay, but to get the job done, we
need help of the people.”
“The conduct of the ULFA is unpredictable. The ULFA leaders even don’t love the people of the State. They don’t hesitate to
kill even innocent school children. The ULFA faction that is carrying out the operation in the State has lost its own
identity,” Srivastava said, and added: “The rebel group has conducted recruitment drives in two border districts of the State
recently. With the help of their sleeping members, who are shifted to other areas after two or three missions, the ULFA
triggers blasts, but doesn’t dare for ambush.”
On Lok Sabha poll security, the DGP said: “We have enough forces. Even then we have asked the poll candidates to remain
alert. All poll candidates of national and recognized parties have been given PSOs and escorts. Each of the Independent
candidates has been given two PSOs. The parties have been asked not to allow parking of vehicles within 50 yards near their
respective election offices.” He further said the police is contemplating on asking business establishments to come forward
to engage people themselves to watch the parking lots near them. “We are also contemplating on engaging some retired people
to keep a watch on busy areas in order to check subversive activities,” he added.
On the alleged link of NC Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) Chief Executive Member (CEM) Mohet Hojai with militants, the DGP
said: “We have already revealed where the cash that was seized from some DHD(J) militants recently come from and where it was
destined for. It is an international gunrunning racket, and investigation on the possible involvement of Hojai is going on.
Involvement of more people will come to light. You will get the outcome of our investigation soon.”
Quoting the CBI on the October 30, 2008 serial blasts in the State, Srivastava said: “The investigation is almost complete,
and the investigating agency is preparing to file the charge-sheet.”
