AASU flayed for invoking ‘Assamese self-pride’

GUWAHATI, Nov 27 – Reiterating that the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) under the leadership of Samujjal Bhattacharya has been coercing business houses into “donating” money, the forum of ex-general secretaries of Gauhati University today said that the AASU adviser was audaciously trying to gain emotional support of the people by relating the matter with “Assamese self-pride”.

In a statement signed by Niren Deka and Pranjit Choudhury, the forum said that Bhattacharya was running the AASU like a dictator and was behaving in an incoherent manner following the expose of just “one of his many misdeeds”.

The forum said that Bhattacharya had no right to involve Assam and the entire community of Assamese people in his justification for donation, which actually is extortion.

“The AASU is a historic organization and Bhattacharya should desist from lowering its image by involving it in forceful donation,” the forum stated, informing that unlike what the AASU has claimed, a representative of Vishal Mega Mart had lodged an FIR(696/10 under Sec 143, 448, 506 of IPC) against some of the AASU members on October 27 with the Paltan Bazar police station.
