Assam Govt to take action against illegal arms holders

GUWAHATI, April 26 : Deterioration of the law and order situation in Kokrajhar has become a matter of serious concern and the State Government has directed the personnel of the police, Army and Central paramilitary forces deployed in the district to take strict action against anyone found to be possessing illegal weapons.

Highly placed official sources told The Assam Tribune today that the police and security forces have also been directed to open fire if any person possessing illegal weapons tries to offer resistance.

The Deputy Commissioner of the district has been directed to impose curfew in any part of the district facing serious clashes between the supporters of the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) and the Bodoland People’s Progressive Front (BPPF).

Sources admitted that the possibility of the situation in the trouble torn district deteriorating could not be ruled out in the aftermath of the attack on Sansuma Khunggur Bwiswmutiary, the BPF candidate from the constituency and adequate precautionary measures are being taken to keep the situation under control. Sources said that all the forces deployed in the district have been put on high alert to deal strongly with any miscreant. However, sources admitted that it is not possible to provide security to each and every household in the district.

Official sources said that the cadres of the National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB), who are in the designated camps, have to take special permission to come out of the camps and now all the weapons in the camp are kept under lock and key. The administration stopped granting permission to any cadre of the NDFB to go out of the camps from five days prior to the polls on April 23. That is why it is not possible for the cadres of the NDFB to take out weapons from the designated camps to create trouble. But the fact remains that all the NDFB cadres are not in the designated camps and there were reports that some of those who are now staying in the designated camps, were never active members of the NDFB. The Government has directed the forces to take strong action against any member of the NDFB found outside the designated camps.

Sources admitted that some former cadres of the Bodo Liberation Tiger (BLT) were also in possession of weapons as it is evident that the cadres of the BLT did not deposit all the weapons when the outfit was disbanded following the signing of the peace accord in 2003. Sources said that the police and security forces have been asked to conduct raids in the places where some former BLT cadres are staying together. In fact, in the past also, a few raids were conducted but those turned to be futile, sources added.

It may be mentioned here that the situation in Kokrajhar started deteriorating following the declaration of the elections as the members and supporters of the BPF and BPPF started attacking each other and the attack on Bwiswmutiary yesterday resulted in further deterioration of the situation.
