During the 2004 Elections, BJP and AGP parted ways and contest the elections separately. As a result, they lost badly to the Congress. The Congress had won 9 out of the 14 seats, while the BJP and AGP 2 seats each.
The situation could be different this time, as Congress is fighting the anti-incumbency and other local issues such as serial bomb blasts and communal riots. the BJP, which has tied up with the AGP, is expected to put up a much better show this time.
During the 2004 elections, the Congress had secured 35.07% of popular votes. The BJP and AGP had secured 22.94% and 19.95% respectively. Their combine vote percentage was way ahead of the Congress, but they lost due to division in non-Congress votes.
The state Congress still maintains that it would win 8-10 seats, while the BJP-AGP combine claims of winning 10-12 seats. The battle will be interesting with these parties making all out efforts to reach the voters.
