Lok Sabha Elections 2009 - Assam

Guwahati, Mar 16 : Both Congress and BJP are in upbeat mode, as Assam goes to polls along with others during the forthcoming general elections 2009. The Lok Sabha elections in Assam, will be held on April 16 and April 23. The Congress is expected to do well, if not better. The BJP, which has forged an alliance with its former partner Assom Gana Parishad (AGP), expects to turn the heat on the Congress this time.

During the 2004 Elections, BJP and AGP parted ways and contest the elections separately. As a result, they lost badly to the Congress. The Congress had won 9 out of the 14 seats, while the BJP and AGP 2 seats each.

The situation could be different this time, as Congress is fighting the anti-incumbency and other local issues such as serial bomb blasts and communal riots. the BJP, which has tied up with the AGP, is expected to put up a much better show this time.

During the 2004 elections, the Congress had secured 35.07% of popular votes. The BJP and AGP had secured 22.94% and 19.95% respectively. Their combine vote percentage was way ahead of the Congress, but they lost due to division in non-Congress votes.

The state Congress still maintains that it would win 8-10 seats, while the BJP-AGP combine claims of winning 10-12 seats. The battle will be interesting with these parties making all out efforts to reach the voters.

Here are the Lok Sabha Constituencies in Assam after Delimitation:

Karimganj, Silchar, Autonomous District, Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Barpeta, Gauhati, Mangaldoi, Tezpur, Nowgong, Kaliabor, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur.
