NILAMBAZAR, March 2 – Karimganj MP, LM Suklabaidya has raised the demand for naming Silchar Railway Station as ‘Bhasa Swahid Rail Station’ and Silchar-Agartala passenger train as ‘Bhasa Swahid Express’ in the Lok Sabha on February 26.
Participating in the Zero Hour discussion, Suklabaidya informed the House that as many as 11 people had fallen to the bullets of the police on May 19, 1961 during their agitation in support of the demand for introduction of Bengali language in Barak Valley.
“The people of Barak Valley want to keep the sacrifice on the part of the 11 martyrs alive forever by naming the railway station and the passenger train as Bhasa Swahid Express respectively, Suklabaidya informed the House regarding the detailed history of May 19, 1961 and added: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and Railway Minister Laloo Prasad Yadav have been moved, but they are yet to take any steps towards that end.”
The people of Barak Valley have also submitted several memoranda to the railway chairman Basudev Achariya, but no reasonable steps have been taken by him till date.
