Gautam Roy not satisfied with stadium works

GUWAHATI, Feb 20  – Although the construction works at the Barsapara cricket stadium of Assam Cricket Association (ACA) is on in full swing, the president of the ACA and State Excise Minister Gautam Roy is not at all satisfied with the progress of works at the site.

Roy, who visited the stadium site with secretary Bikash Baruah today, said, the south stand should have been completed by this time as per the agreement. But the construction giant Lloyd Insulations (India) Limited failed in fulfilling their commitment. Showing his anger on the company, Roy said that as per the plan the south stand should have been completed by this month. The company is working round the clock to complete the task but it seemed to be impossible to complete the whole stand within the remaining days of this month.

He, however, asserted that within 2011 the whole project will be completed and the State will get a state of the art cricket stadium, which will also be of world class. Roy also revealed, the construction works will continue, as there should not be any crisis for fund. He informed that at present the ACA has adequate fund and the Indian cricket board (BCCI) is also ready to help in setting up the stadium. Roy said that the Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has already released Rs 1.5 crore for this Rs 50 crore project.

Roy also revealed 90 percent of encroachment have been cleared and the remaining part will be evicted soon and after that the whole complex will have the required space. On the approach roads to the stadium, the ACA president said, after completing the stadium all the approach roads will be developed so that spectators, officials and players can have easy passage for entering into the ground.

ACA secretary Bikash Baruah said tender has been invited for constructing the north stand and it will be opened on February 27. The works of the north stand, where players pavilion, media centre etc will be placed, will be started immediately after selecting the construction party. He also intimated that the construction cost is likely to be increased as the sitting capacity has been enhanced to 50,000.

Baruah informed that already around Rs 7 crore have been spent in the project. The boundary walling and earth filling works have been almost completed and the main ground is also prepared. He further said, the BCCI officials visit the site time to time to take stock of the progress of works as they release fund only after completing proper inspection of the works. source: assam tribune
