Shillong, Feb 09: The indefinite strike by truckers in Assam and Meghalaya was lifted today after authorities assured action against alleged illegal collection at toll gates along the highways in the Garo Hills.
"The truckers have lifted their strike. We have assured we will take action against the illegally set up toll gates, pollution testing centres and weigh bridges," East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Vijay Kumar told media after a meeting representatives of different truckers associations at Williamnagar.
The strike, spearheaded by Goalpara District Truck Owners Association (GDTOA) of Assam and backed by Meghalaya Commercial Truck Owners' and Operators' Association among others, had began on February 7.
Besides movement of goods in the two states, coal exports from Meghalaya to Bangladesh was also hit by the strike with about 250 truckers refusing to operate via Garo Hills.
Kumar said the government will take action on the truckers' demands as soon as the district council polls are over later this month.
