Assam aims to become global tourist destination: Gogoi

Guwahati , Feb 25 : Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today announced the state&aposs first tourism policy, which aims to make the north eastern state a tourist destination for both domestic and international travellers in the next five years.

"The state had tremendous tourist potential which is yet to be exploited and the government aimed at massive development in the area to achieve economic progress," Gogoi said.

The policy has three broad sectors of tea, nature and rural tourism and the government aims at building infrastructure which would in turn help in massive employment generation.

The government has plans to set up a tourism promotion council to coordinate with the private sector in developing the tourist routes and sites in the state, Gogoi said.

State Tourism Minister Rockybul Hussain said the government has plans to develop war cemeteries and the tea sector to attract international tourists whose ancestors were part of World War-II, for which Assam was a major site of operation, and those who had set up the tea industry in the state.
