GUWAHATI, Dec 28 – An ambitious special project in Science Communication has been awarded to the Department of Communication and Journalism of Gauhati University by the National Council for Science Technology Communication (NCSTC) under the Union Department of Science and Technology (DST), a press release said.
The project aims at popularising as well as communcating various developments of science and technology to the masses in a language understandable to them by training upcoming students of mass communication in institutions of higher education. The project has provisions for appointment of a senior faculty member, guest/visiting faculty members, educational tour of science education institutions etc. In future, the department would be expected to carry out extension activities in this regard like a nodal agency for NCSTC, DST etc.
Abhijit Bora, Head of the Department (i/c) has been appointed principal coordinator for implementation of the project and a project monitoring committee has already been formed for smooth functioning of the scheme with the Vice Chancellor of GU as the chairman. The project is awarded initially for a period of one year with provision for extending it up to five years depending upon successful implementation of the same.
Science Communication is a new and emerging field still in its initial stage. A proper implementation of the project will allow the students of the department a lot of scope for professional engagements in future, both in jobs as well as self-engagement. Further, not only the students, the project will also aim at extending its scope to the field practitioners in every area of mass communication for spreading the messages of a scientific temper and basic tenets of science for the benefit of the people.
