CBI to probe gory Assam bombings

New Delhi, Dec 19 : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Thursday officially took over the probe into Assam’s serial bombings that killed 89 people and injured over 500.

“We took over the case after it was notified to us by the Assam government and following approval from the department of personnel and training,” a CBI official said here.

A team of 30 CBI officers including forensic and ballistics experts and photographers would leave for Guwahati Friday.

The case has been entrusted to the joint director in the Special Task Force in CBI. A deputy inspector general will lead the investigating team.

Nine serial bombs exploded in Assam on Oct 30 causing mayhem. It was one of the worst terror attacks in India’s northeast.

The CBI takes charge of the case even as the central government is setting up a National Investigating Agency (NIA) to probe terrorist attacks in the country.
