Assam admits partial utilisation of Centre's grants

Guwahati: The Assam government on Monday admitted that it has failed to fully utilize the Central grants under the 12th Finance Commission.

Replying to a question by opposition Asom Gana Parishad's (AGP) Aloka Desai Sarma in the state Assembly, senior minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said certain "procedural tangles" had resulted in a failure of optimum utilisation of funds.

The minister said the government had successfully utilised 85 percent of the plan allocation, which is "very good" when compared to other states.

"There are certain problems in implementing Centrally-sponsored schemes which was project related and there was bound be some delay in its implementation," he said.

Moreover, Sarma said as the state was approaching Assembly election next year, the fund allocation will come down with the election code of conduct in force.
