Fox History's 'Mighty Ahoms' draws criticism

Sivsagar, Sep 8 : A programme on the Ahom rulers of Assam, aired on Fox History channel last week, has drawn sharp criticism from the Ahom Royal Society, which alleged that the channel wrongly portrayed several important facts regarding the dynasty.

The Lakwa-based Society alleged that the producers and directors of Fox History channels programme Mighty Ahoms, telecast on September 3, had deliberately vilified the Ahom community and presented a distorted version of Assam history. Kamala Rajkonwar, chief secretary of the organisation, said the documentary film showed scenes of Royal burial mound where the dead king was buried with a live person tied alongside, which Rajkonwar claimed was a false portrayal.

Rajkonwar also questioned the authenticity of the comment in the documentary that the Ahoms discarded the practice of burial in 'maidams' after adopting Hindu religion when the royal family descendents still continue the tradition.

The Ahom Royal Society also criticised the episode-makers for terming Sankardeva as the lone founder of the Satras (Vashnavite learning sites) in Assam and ignoring the four major Satras founded under Ahom Royal patronage.

The Society further expressed its anguish for overlooking Gomodhar Konwar, the martyr who sacrificed his life fighting the British.

''The Fox History channels telecast has presented a distorted and perverted picture of the Ahom and its culture,'' Rajkonwar said.
