BJP demands fencing of Assam-Bangla border

GUWAHATI, Aug 9 – BJP’s national general secretary Vijay Goel on Sunday announced that the party would not be silent on the failure of the government to fence the Assam-Bangladesh border with barbed wire, which is one of the crucial clauses of the Assam Accord.

The party also demanded of the Tarun Gogoi government to come up with districtwise white paper on the utilisation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) funds.

Addressing mediapersons here, Goel regretted that major clauses of the Assam

Accord remained unimplemented even after so many years. August 14 this year would be the silver jubilee of the signing of the historic Assam Accord.

“It is very unfortunate that the main issues of the Assam Accord have not been solved till date,” remarked Goel demanding that the process of NRC update in the State should be resumed at the earliest. The pilot project of NRC update which was started in Barpeta and Chaygaon revenue circles has been suspended by the government following the Barpeta violence. Goel described the move as unfortunate for an elected government.

Further slamming the Tarun Gogoi government, Goel said that it had no answer to the people’s problems. “As of date nothing is right in Assam as the government doesn’t even want to discuss the issues of the people,” he said pointing to the deteriorating law and order situation, rampant corruption and unabated influx to the State, issues which the government has allegedly ignored for its political gain.

Goel also said that a few political parties in the State were abetting the Bangladeshis for narrow political gain.

Referring to the widespread corruption in the State, Goel said that the Congress government was patronizing corruption and huge amounts of central money have been misappropriated including the funds for implementation of the NREGA.

Goel said that the CBI which is probing the NC Hills scam be given the mandate to interrogate any public servants, irrespective of their position, as required for a free and fair investigation.

Goel declared that the movement launched in the State by the BJP against price rise, corruption, illegal infiltration, and construction of big dams would be intensified in the coming days.
