28 Assam towns get Central assistance for storm water drainage

New Delhi, Jul 9 : The Ministry of Urban Development has sanctioned projects of Rs 207.80 crore, under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) for drainage of storm water in 28 small and medium towns of Assam.

Out of Rs 207.60 crore, an amount of about 100 crore was released by April this year so that significant work could be carried out before the peak monsoon.

Towns getting the assistance are Hojal, Titabar, Pathsala, Bokakhat, Lakhipur (water supply), Lakhipur (water drainage), Hailakandi, Hojal, Sarthebari, Dhekiajuli, Marigaon, Hamren, Chabua, Goisaigoan, Barpeta Road, Lanka, Lankhipur, Howraghat, Digboi, Basugaon, Maibong, Lala, Barpeta, Udalguri, Simaluguri, Gauripur, Jorhat, Sapatgram, Dhubri and Dergaon.

Under the JNNRUM, the Ministry of Urban Development is providing assistance for sewerage for improvement of roads and supply of drinking water, besides providing improved buses for urban transport.

The North-East, including Assam, is a priority area under the scheme. Three major projects for development of urban infrastructure in major cities have also been sanctioned for the State.
