Guwahati, Nov. 22: The Assam under-19 girl cricketers scripted history by booking a final berth in the national under-19 girls’ cricket tournament.
The Assam girls defeated their Hyderabad counterparts by 33 runs in the semi-final at Krishananagar in West Bengal yesterday to sail into the final of the limited-overs tournament.
In the final to be played at Kalyani on Wednesday, Assam will face the winners of tomorrow’s second semi-final between Uttar Pradesh and Baroda. This is the first time Assam have made it to the final of any women’s national tournament after women’s cricket was adopted by the BCCI.
The Assam girls started playing cricket two years ago and the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) has complimented the girls and coach Devieka Sathe, a former international, for the achievement. Only eight of the 33 affiliated and 7-member district units of the Assam Cricket Association have so far produced teams.
In the semi-final yesterday, Assam batted first and were all out for 106 in 48 overs.
Jahnavi Pando (33) and Babli Gogoi (18) were the notable scorers for Assam.
For Hyderabad, Ananya Upendra shone with the ball with a haul of 3 for 14.
Hyderabad, in reply, were bowled out for 73 in 40 overs.
M.C. Chanu was the most successful Assam bowler, having scalped 3 for 13.
Assam earlier qualified for the knockouts as the second team from the East Zone along with Bengal in the zonal league held in Agartala last month. In the knockouts, Assam defeated formidable sides like Maharashtra and Haryana and settled for a draw with Madhya Pradesh.
