Assam flood situation improves marginally

Guwahati , July 6 The flood situation improved marginally in Assam today with slight let-up in rains but most of the rivers, including Brahmaputra and its tributaries, were still flowing above the danger mark.
However, water level of Brahmaputra and its tributaries showed a receding trend in upper Assam districts of Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, central Assam&aposs Morigaon, and lower Assam&aposs Barpeta, Guwahati ( Kamrup district), Bongaigaon, Dhubri and Baksa, official sources said here.

Nearly six lakh people have been affected as the district administrations stepped up efforts to provide relief and rehabilitation.

In Majuli, the world&aposs largest inhabited river island, almost the entire area remained submerged under Brahmaputra waters with a villager reported to be drowned.

The situation remained grim in worst-hit districts of Lakhimpur, Dhemaji and Jorhat with vast tracts of land under water following breaches in embankment due to heavy rainfall in the foothills of Himalayas in Arunachal Pradesh.

In Dhemaji, water of river Semen inundated vast tracts of land in Jonai sub-division while Gai and Jiadhol were also in spate.
