Tea growers oppose cess

Dibrugarh, May 4 : At a time when the state government had stated that it would go ahead with the 20 paise cess from per kg of green leaf produced by the small tea growers of the state in the unorganised sector, the small tea growers have decided to oppose the government’s decision.
It said it would go to any extent to pressurise the government to withdraw its decision.
A meeting of small tea growers during the 6th Triennial conference of the Duliajan chapter of All Assam Small Tea Growers Association today resolved that the government should immediately withdraw the decision which the association felt was detrimental to the well being of the small tea growers of the state.
It may be mentioned that the state government had taken the decision to impose the 20 paise cess on per kg of green leaf produced by the small tea growers in lieu of the land being used by the small tea growers, most of which are government-owned land.
A 31-member new committee was also formed during the conference.
