Post-poll violence in Assam feared

GUWAHATI, May 15 – Police and security agencies are apprehending post-poll violence in different parts of Assam and the operational group of the Unified Command today discussed strategies to deal with such eventuality. Official sources said that the Operational group of the Unified Command met here this morning to discuss strategies to be adopted to deal with post poll violence and those who attended the meeting were of the view that the possibility of clashes in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) area as well as in the districts of Dhubri, Nagaon etc cannot be ruled out following the counting of votes. The meeting took decisions on redeployment of available forces to the areas considered vulnerable to deal with any kind of situation. However, sources refused to give the details of the decisions taken on deployment of forces.

It may be mentioned here that the BTC areas witnessed series of clashes between the members and supporters of the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) and the Bodoland People’s Progressive Front (BPPF) in the run up to the polls and even the BPF candidate for Kokrajhar constituency, Sansuma Khunggur Bwiswmutiaty had a narrow escape when his convoy was attacked the day after the polls.

Sources said that the Operational Group, chaired by the GOC of the 4 Corps of the Army, also discussed the security scenario in the North Cachar Hills district. The NC Hills security scenario deteriorated sharply and even the train services had to be suspended following a series of militant attacks. Sources said that the security forces engaged in the counter-insurgency operations in the district were of the view that the terrain in the hill district and the lack of support from the local people seriously affected operations.

Sources said that the operational group decided to improve coordination between the forces operating in the district and decisions were also taken for redeployment of forces in strategic locations where most of the attacks had taken place in recent times. Though the situation in Karbi Anglong is now under control, there were intelligence inputs about regrouping and fresh recruitments by the militants belonging to the KLNLF and this issue also came up for discussion in the meeting.

Official sources said that though the ULFA did not indulge in any major act of violence before the elections, there are intelligence inputs that the militants might try to trigger off explosions in Guwahati, Bongaigaon and certain other parts of the State soon and the operational group discussed the steps need to be taken to prevent any such attempt.
