Malda (WB), May 4: Nine Railway Special Protection Force (RSPF) jawans were on Sunday admitted to Divisional Railway Hospital here when they were diagnosed with malaria after returning from poll duty in Assam.
"They are suffering from falciparum malaria. Other members of the RSPF battalion have been administered medicine for malaria and they responded well. Precautionary measures were taken to stop the disease from spreading," Chief Medical Superintendent, Dr D Sarkar said.
The RSPF jawans based at Chittaranjan in West Bengal were heading to Murshidabad district for poll duty in the fourth phase of Lok Sabha polls on May 7.
They were deployed during polls at Diphu in Assam's insurgency-hit Karbi Anglong district, sources said.
The jawans consulted doctors at Islampur in North Dinajpur district when travelling by train. Five were immediately sent to the railway hospital here after initial treatment, sources said. Four others who had gone to Murshidabad to report for duty were sent to the hospital, sources said.
