Guwahati , Mar 30 : Taking strong exception to the opposition&aposs allegation that he received money to the tune of Rs 21 crore from the tea industry for electioneering, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today offered to quit politics if the charges were proved.

"The charge is false, misleading and malicious aimed at maligning my image. I urge the AGP and BJP leaders to prove their allegation. And if it is found true, I am prepared to quit politics," Gogoi said in a statement here.

The AGP and the BJP had alleged that the chief minister during his recent visit to Kolkata had received money to the tune of Rs 21 crore from the tea industry for Congress&aposelection campaign.

" Both the AGP and BJP have gone bankrupt on ideas and are levelling this allegation. The parties should furnish concrete evidence of their charge in public or face a defamation suit," Gogoi said.

Earlier in a press conference, the chief minister said that he had accepted funds for election campaign as all political parties did, but asserted"I have never said that I have personally taken Rs 21 crore from the tea industry".

The chief minister gave the opposition parties a week&aposs time to prove their charge.
