Agartala, Mar 2 : The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will invest Rs.13.71 billion for developing urban amenities and solid waste management in the capitals of five under-developed states, officials on Sunday said. The ADB-assisted North Eastern Region Urban Development Programme will be implemented over six years and will cover Agartala (Tripura), Shillong (Meghalaya), Aizawl in Mizoram, Kohima (Nagaland) and Gangtok (Sikkim).
"The central government has approved the ADB-assisted programme," said Tripura Urban Development Minister Manik Dey. "The ADB's technical and programme appraisal teams had visited the five capitals a number of times to finalise the scheme, which is scheduled to be completed by 2015," the minister said. The project aims to upgrade roads, drainage systems, water supply facilities, sanitation, solid waste management, transportation, landslip protection and slums. "The programme will improve and expand infrastructure and services in these towns and strengthen urban institutional management and the financing capacity of urban institutions," the minister said. In respect of solid waste management, the components will include improvement of collection efficiency, introduction of house-to-house collection system, and development of new disposal sites and composite plants. Tree plantation and ensuring a cleaner and safer environment are among the priorities of the project. (IANS)
