GUWAHATI, Feb 20 In what could be a major fillip to the local designs, handloom and handicrafts industries of the State, the Union Government has sanctioned the project of National Institute of Design (NID) for Assam, stated the Union Minister of Commerce Kamal Nath today. Emphasising the need for infrastructural development in the field of designing, he said that the talents of the local people should be honed by building up good infrastructure.
“The Union Government has cleared the NID proposal of Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and the process would start soon,” he said in the inaugural function of the Maniram Dewan Trade Centre, Guwahati.
“India is a country where entrepreneurs can design a car like Nano and the most intricate designs are woven by its artisans, winning global acclaim. More and more people should be encouraged to get proper training in a world class institute,” he added.
The National Institute of Design (NID) is internationally acclaimed as one of the foremost multi-disciplinary institutions in the field of design education and research. The Business Week of USA has listed NID as one of the top 25 European and Asian programmes in the world.
The institute functions as an autonomous body under the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. NID is recognized by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) under the Ministry of Science and Technology as a scientific and industrial design research organisation.
NID is internationally recognized as one of the foremost multidisciplinary institutions in the field of design education, applied research, training, design consultancy services and outreach programmes. Research at NID ranges from the application of ergonomics to a variety of industrial situations, transportation, health aid, design for children, conservation of materials, crafts and design for rural needs, applications of new materials and technologies and re-examination of traditional ones.
“A world-class infrastructure for promoting the local designs and training up our manpower is the need of the hour,” stated Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.
