NRHM brings major transformation in Lakhimpur district

 NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Jan 8 :  The National Rural Health Mission(NRHM), initiated in 2005 has brought unprecedented changes in the health sector of Lakhimpur district in the year 2008, a press note issued by Dr Jeevan Ch Doley, joint director, District Health Services and member secretary, District Health Society, Lakhimpur recently.

The success includes the improvement of medical infrastructure, births in state hospitals, complete vaccination of children, increased health awareness, payments in hospital births, observation and health and nutrition days etc.

In Lakhimpur district, the NRHM has so far recruited 335 workers of various levels including 15 doctors, 171 ANM nurses and 95 staff nurses.

Similarly 1033 ASHA workers have been selected in the district representing every 1000 people in every village to bridge the society with the health department. In the infrastructure development programme under the NRHM, the Lakhimpur district Health department has set up four sub-PHC spending Rs 30,000 each since 2005 and 40 sub-PHCs spending Rs 1 lakh each.

Similarly four mini PHCs and dispensaries have been renovated by spending Rs 50,000 each. For labour and post-labour services the District Health department has set up two PHCs by spending Rs 5,30,000 each, two community health centres with labour rooms at the cost of Rs 7,40,000.

Further works are under progress in the six CHCs to form Indian Public Health Standard and upgradation of Bihpuria PHC to a first referral unit 9303 births at state hospitals in Lakhimpur district from April, 2008 to November, 2008 which includes beneficiaries of Janani Suraksha Yojana. In the child immunization programme, Lakhimpur recorded a high 88.22% of increase in the year 2007-08. In the family planning sector, the district witnessed a record 104% of laparoscopic sterilization for women in the year 2007-08. Similarly 5836 village health and nutrition days were observed in North Lakhimpur between April to November, 2008.

The Mobile Medical Unit, started from March 14, 2008 has so far conducted 76 medical camps in the district extending health services to 21,515 persons and formed 1036 Village Health and Sanitation Committees with an annual grant of Rs. 10,000.

Apart from the NRHM, the North Lakhimpur Civil Hospital set a record by facilitating 2218 normal births and 920 Caesarian births in the year 2008. The hospital also received a considerable number of revenues from the various paid services.

It has received Rs 3,16,800 from 1056 ultra sounds, Rs 3,85,000 from 763 CT scans, Rs 36,915 from 10,110 pathological tests, Rs 3,57,650 from paying cabins and Rs 3,84,250 from its blood bank in the year 2008.
