Ethnic riot victims' rehab by Jan 15

GUWAHATI, Jan 7 - Minister in charge of Relief and Rehabilitation Dr Bhumidhar Barman today informed that around 43,000 people displaced in the ethnic riots in the districts of Darrang and Udalguri are still living in relief camps and the Government has set a deadline of January 15 to complete the process of rehabilitation of the riot-affected people.

Replying to a question by Abhijit Hazarika (BJP) in the State Assembly, the Minister sought the cooperation of the legislators to instil confidence in the minds of the people. However, he refused to comment on the controversy of hoisting of Pakistani flags in the riot hit districts and said that the probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) would find out whether the reports in this connection were true.

The House witnessed a heated war of words over the issue when Mohibul Haque, an associate member of the Congress claimed that Pakistani flags were not hoisted in Darrang and Udalguri.

His comment invited angry reaction from the opposition members who said that Haque was not a Minister to give such clarification.

Chandra Mohan Patowary (AGP) said that the matter of hoisting of Pakistani flag was reported in News Live and even Pakistani newspapers reported the same. Badruddin Ajmal (AUDF) also demanded a clarification from the Government on the issue.
