GUWAHATI, Dec 21 : Three suspected cadres of the All Adivasi National Liberation Army (AANLA), an Adivasi militant outfit, were killed in an encounter with a joint team of police and army at Udalguri in the wee hours of Sunday.
Udalguri deputy commissioner SB Sundaram said that there were prohibitory orders clamped in the area which bars movement of people in the night time.
"The joint team of police and security forces came across a group of people in the area," he said and added that the forces had to fire at the group as they violated the prohibitory orders.
"While the rest of the people in the group could escape taking advantage of the darkness, the forces could gun down three people," said the DC while adding that three 9mm pistols and one grenade were recovered from the place of occurrence.
"We have ascertained the identity of the slain militants and search is on for the escaping members of the group," Sundaram added. He, however, refused to divulge the identity of the slain militants as it might hamper further investigation.
The district is a known transit point of the Adivasi militants and there were intelligence inputs about the movement of the militants in the area and we had intensified the deployment of security forces in the area, the DC added.
