Steps to prevent bird flu outbreak in Lakhimpur dist

 NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Dec 28 – As part of measures to check outbreak of avian flu in the district, the Lakhimpur Health Department has set up two special cabins to provide medical care to any possible bird flu patients.

The Lakhimpur district administration has also started other precautionary measures in this regard.

An important meeting was held in this connection on December 15 at the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Lakhimpur, involving officials of the district Health, Veterinary and Revenue departments. Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Commissioner Jayant Narlikar called upon the gathering to speed up measures to contain the spread of avian flu in Lakhimpur district. The Joint Director of Health Services, Lakhimpur, Dr JC Doley, informed in the meeting that the District Health Department had received Tamiflu and other essential medicines along with triple-layer masks from the government to fight any possible outbreak of the bird flu in Lakhimpur. So far there has been no reports of outbreak of avian flu in the district.

In a related development, the Lakhimpur District Health Department has prepared a detailed plan to control the malaria disease in Lakhimpur in the coming season. A training programme for medical officers of all the Primary Health Centres of Lakhimpur district was held on December 8 in North Lakhimpur as part of malaria outbreak preparedness. The Lakhimpur district has been marked as a malaria-prone district by the State Health Department following the event of the disease taking an epidemic form in 2006. However, malaria was completely contained in Lakhimpur district in the following year in 2007.
