DIBRUGARH, Dec 23 : Highly placed sources in Oil India Limited (OIL) today confirmed that the company is not carrying out seismic survey and drilling activities in Dibru Saikhowa National Park (DSNP) area, "since this is not permitted vide a Supreme Court directive". What OIL has proposed to do is to deploy "Gravity & Magnetic Methods" to acquire some geo-scientific data regarding basement configuration and other geological information beneath the surface of the earth. "The Gravity & Magnetic (G&M) surveys are non-destructive methods and are used to determine information about the subsurface, particularly the sedimentary thickness of the Basin," the sources informed.
It is gathered that the sizes of the instruments deployed, that is Gravity meter & Magneto meter used in such surveys are small and compact weighing each about 10 kg which are carried to the field by labourer. Deployment of such equipment is not detrimental to the environment, these do not generate any sound nor cause any pollution. No engine or generator are used in this type of survey, that may cause any pollution.
The OIL sources said that GM surveys are absolutely environmental friendly, these do not entail felling of any tree nor cause any disturbance whatsoever to wildlife and flora. "This is why we have been permitted by the Union ministry of environment and forests for carrying out G&M surveys, after obtaining due clearances from the Supreme Court, the sources added.
