More than 100 historic tanks neglected in Assam

More than 100 water tanks, built by Ahom kings more than 700 years ago, are languishing in upper Assam's Sibsagar district.

Various socio-cultural organisations, including the Yuvadal, senior citizens' bodies and intellectuals, have protested against the manner in which the huge tanks of immense historical value are preserved.

Demanding that the Archaeological Survey of India take over the historic tanks in Sibsagar - the Sivasagar, Gaurisagar and Jaysagar - they said the tanks had been excavated by Ahom kings who ruled the state from the 12th century to the 18th century.

Yuvadol, an organisation of young people, alleged that even the district administration was not bothered about maintaining the tanks.

An 80-year-old citizen Rupjyoti Mahanta said the only way to preserve the historic tanks would be to declare them as 'protected' under provisions of the relevant acts for preservation of ancient monuments.
