Call for end to NC Hills violence

GUWAHATI, July 12 – The citizens’ meet organised by the Greater Guwahati Dimasa Kachari Association and attended by a cross-section of people including representatives from different ethnic bodies at Gauri Sadan today called upon both the State Government and the Centre to initiate short-term as well as long-term measures for restoration of peace and normalcy in the violence-hit NC Hills district. The meet also denounced the ongoing spate of violence in NC Hills, saying that violence and hate campaigns were never a solution to any problem and that a group of people or a community should not be judged by the action of a few. It also urged those indulging in violence and counter-violence to desist from such acts as vengeance and justice were not necessarily the same.

Eminent journalist Homen Bargohain moderated the session of deliberations which was attended by different civil society organizations including the Zeme Naga Council, Jadikhe Naisho Hoshom, the Dimasa apex body, and the Indigenous Tribal Sahitya Sabha.

“The meet arrived at a conclusion that both the Government of India and the Government of Assam should take both short-term long-term measures so that a situation of peace and tranquility is established,” a statement from the organisers said.

Resolving to tackle all contentious issues through dialogue and negotiations, the meet urged the State Government to facilitate relief and rehabilitation for the affected people at the earliest.
