Garos demand deletion of 81 villages from Rabha council map

GUWAHATI, Feb 8 : In a memorandum issued to the Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup district on February 3, the Garo National Council of Kamrup district demanded the exclusion of 81 Garo villages from the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC) map, a press release said.

As mentioned in the memorandum, the Council stated that 81 Garo villages and some 24 Khasi villages fall under the RHAC map which are included without any prior consent or accord.

One of the main reasons they strongly oppose the inclusion of these villages is that the Rabhas are culturally and linguistically different and socially not adjustable with the Garo people. They are also accused of forcibly trespassing into Garo people’s crop land and residential premises.

The Garo people expressed serious concern through the memorandum that if their areas are inserted under the RHAC, it may lead to communal tension between the two tribes.

The Council mentioned that since inception of the RHAC, it was frustrated as a joint memorandum to the State Government on August 9, last year is yet to evince any favourable response from the powers that be. The Council reiterated that response in favour of their demands and appeals was still awaited.

The last joint memorandum by the Council was submitted to Dr Bhumidhar Barman, Minister for Revenue, Relief and Rehabilitation and chairman of the Cabinet sub-committee for the Autonomous District Council, and Pramila Rani Brahma, Minister for Agriculture, on December 27, last year, the release concluded.
